Enterprise payments platform SwiftPay has highlighted growing operational inefficiencies and manual reconciliation challenges faced by Philippine enterprises despite the rapid rise of consumer digital transactions.

According to data cited by the company from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP_ 2024 status report, digital payments now account for 57.4% of monthly retail transaction volume and 59% of value in the country. However, the platform noted that back-office infrastructure has not kept pace with front-end transaction growth, leaving finance teams to manually reconcile data into enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.

The Back-Office Operational Burden

SwiftPay stated that high-volume businesses operating multiple payment channels frequently face fragmented reconciliation across disparate bank portals. This decentralized setup leads to manual data entry errors and delays in updating corporate ledgers, according to the platform.

“The industry spent years hyper-focusing on front-end acceptance, rates, and point-of-sale hardware,” SwiftPay Chief Revenue Officer Damian Gil said in a statement. “But for a complex, regulated enterprise, acceptance is just the tip of the iceberg. The real risk to cash flow planning and operational efficiency lives in what happens after the payment.”

Integration Over System Replacement

To mitigate these operational lags, SwiftPay recommended that companies utilize integration layers that sit directly over existing payment networks rather than undergoing complete overhauls of their financial systems.

The company stated that consolidating transactions through a single integration layer allows automated routing and reconciliation across various local networks. This setup aims to sync payment clearings directly with core accounting systems to improve liquidity management.

SwiftPay operates as a regulated Operator of Payment System (OPS) in the Philippines, providing collections, disbursements, and reconciliation services across major domestic payment networks including GCash, Maya, QR Ph, and major card providers.
